Love that Benedict and Sophie are inverses of each other
This came about when I had a lull in my work day but it's fascinating how these two are inverses of one another. These were just a few I thought of but I'm sure there's more.
Probably the biggest one is freedom vs security:
- Benedict has security but craves freedom. He has no material uncertainty like Sophie does, so he can afford to resist social structure and commitment.
- Sophie has freedom because she's technically unattached to anything given her background but it's precarious rather than liberating so she craves security and wants to find somewhere she can safely belong.
Re freedom, I was also thinking of how I like that by the end of season, Benedict doesn't stop being Benedict. He's still artistic, unconventional, playful, and resistant to society's rules. The thing that changed is how he understands freedom i.e., going from it meaning keeping his options open to ending with it meaning having the agency to choose what he wants and then stand by that choice.
All that to say: yes I'm still cornplating and thinking about this season months later π
