Old handler, newer condenser non compatible
If I'm in the wrong place, please let me know!
First time home buyer here, learning a lot. Closing in a week. When we got our inspection, they let us know the air handler is original (2003), but the condenser is newer (2023). They said it works fine and all that.
I got an extra inspection of the system done just to see how long the handler would have and if we needed to ask for anything to cover. Inspection 2 said that the handler and condenser are non compatible and said to have a whole new system. We asked for a seller credit to help with the handler. Called another hvac company, they said the same: it's non compatible and that the refrigerant for the condenser is being phased out, and because of this they can't just replace one without the other.
Handler is Lennox, R-22 refrigerant, model CB30M-46-1P from 2003.
Condenser is Goodman, R-410 refrigerant, model GSZB404210AA from 2023.
Both are still working, but probably not as effectively as they could. We live in Arizona, and I'm absolutely terrified of having our a/c die on us when we need it, and we don't yet have the savings for emergency replacements.
We have a year home warranty (I know, not ideal but we learned they suck too late in the process, it's paid by the seller) and I think we got insurance to cover appliances.
Are the hvac companies just trying to swindle us? Would we be better off just replacing everything now or holding out and seeing what happens? I am feeling absolutely drained by this already.
