Should I apply for an internal role I have no interest in?
Hello,
I currently work in HR in the public sector. Our HR team is fairly small, 7 people in total. There's an internal role opening up within our department that would be a higher position, more pay. I essentially have no interest in the position because of previous people in that position being overworked and working 10-hour days. We have asked in the past for that position to be split into two or even hire a part-timer to take on some of the workload, but our manager is not open to the idea. Even the person in that role discouraged me from applying because she was under so much stress every single day, with barely any support from her manager. Work-life balance is horrible and I would be bumping up to 36/hr. I'm currently at 30/hr. I have been told by one of my coworkers to apply for the role even if I'm not interested so I can show "growth." I am 100% open to growth but I don't see myself being happy in that position. I know for sure another position in our department is going to be open in a couple of years, since the current person is going to be retiring. I am very happy in my current role and would like to stay in my role until that position opens up.
I'm stressing before even applying but I just don't know what to do. I've already shown growth in many different ways. I was promoted to my current role within the first 3 months of working. And I streamlined many procedures that were outdated in this role. I know I can always reject the offer if I do get it, but if I don't want it at all then should I even bother applying?
