Why did American pizza become a completely different food compared to traditional Italian pizza?

Original Italian pizza is thin, light, with minimal cheese and simple tomato sauce, but American pizza is loaded with heavy cheese, thick crusts, and sweet sauce. How and why did it evolve into such a heavy comfort food after coming to the US?
