I spent 30 days fixing the SEO of a small business website — here's what I changed
I recently worked on a small business website that had decent content but very little organic visibility.
Instead of immediately building backlinks, I started with the basics.
Here's what I worked on:
- Fixed indexing and crawl issues
- Improved title tags and meta descriptions
- Reworked keyword targeting
- Improved internal linking
- Updated thin/old content
- Added location-specific pages where relevant
- Improved content structure and search intent alignment
The interesting part was that some of the biggest improvements didn't come from backlinks.
The biggest lesson for me was:
Don't treat SEO as "add keywords + build links."
Technical issues, search intent, internal linking and content quality can make a much bigger difference than people expect.
