Trying to understand one of Frans Lanting's photos
I've been experimenting with analyzing photographs or recognized photographers to better understand why certain images work. I ran this Frans Lanting photograph of penguins through an analysis and got some interesting observations - https://happymiru.com/shared/photos/1eb80c1b-0871-4a1b-87cd-53153427ad89
I find this one very fascinating because it is such a different composition than common wildlife photos.
The analysis says that the slow exposure is intentional and is what gives the image its energy (which I agree). It also points out the repeated yellow/orange markings, the vertical penguin on the left, and the partially recognizable penguin toward the center-right as elements that keep the image from becoming completely abstract.
But then it makes a criticism that several penguins compete for attention, but no single anchor becomes decisively dominant.
Would having a dominant figure like an unblurred penguin in the middle have been better? Ofcourse, not in photographer's control.. but just trying to project and understand.
