Welcome to r/MediaRuntimeAPI ๐Ÿ‘‹

Hey everyone! I'm u/OpeningFirefighter25, a founding moderator of r/MediaRuntimeAPI.

This is the community for MediaRuntime โ€” an asynchronous media-processing API for developers building with video, audio, and images.

MediaRuntime is built around a simple idea: your application shouldn't need to maintain its own collection of FFmpeg workers, media queues, storage plumbing, retries, processing models, and delivery logic just to add media features.

You submit a source, describe the outputs your application needs, and MediaRuntime handles the processing asynchronously.

A basic job can be as small as:

{
  "source": "https://example.com/video.mp4",
  "outputs": ["video.web"]
}

But the platform goes beyond basic transcoding. MediaRuntime supports workflows across video, audio, images, streaming, transcription, media analysis, moderation, privacy processing, transformations, and reusable processing recipes through the same job model.

What to post here

This subreddit is for developers using, testing, or simply interested in MediaRuntime.

Good topics include:

  • Integration questions and troubleshooting
  • API, SDK, and CLI questions
  • Feature requests
  • Bugs and unexpected behavior
  • Media-processing architecture discussions
  • Video, audio, and image workflow ideas
  • Examples of things you've built with MediaRuntime
  • Questions about presets, recipes, webhooks, moderation, or media analysis
  • Feedback on the API and developer experience
  • MediaRuntime updates and release discussions

You don't have to be a MediaRuntime customer to participate. If you're building media infrastructure yourself, comparing approaches, or wondering whether an API makes sense for your application, those discussions are welcome too.

What MediaRuntime is trying to solve

Media processing often starts innocently:

โ€œWe just need to convert this video.โ€

Then comes HLS, thumbnails, image renditions, audio extraction, transcripts, retries, queues, moderation, storage, delivery, usage tracking...

MediaRuntime is my attempt to put that infrastructure behind one consistent developer-facing runtime.

Jobs are asynchronous, capabilities are discoverable, production requests use API keys, completion can be delivered through signed webhooks, and completed outputs are packaged into downloadable bundles. The API also supports stable output aliases such as video.web, so developers can request an outcome without specifying every low-level encoding parameter.

Community vibe

I'd like this to become more than an announcement feed.

Criticism is welcome. If an API is awkward, documentation is unclear, a preset is missing, a job behaves unexpectedly, or you think an architectural decision is wrong, say so. Constructive technical criticism will help make MediaRuntime better.

Likewise, feel free to share alternative approaches and tools. This doesn't need to become a place where every answer is โ€œuse MediaRuntime.โ€

Getting started

Introduce yourself, tell us what you're building, try the sandbox or API, or simply post a media-processing problem you've been dealing with.

If you're integrating MediaRuntime and get stuck, post the problem here (without API keys, webhook secrets, signed download tokens, or sensitive customer media).

Thanks for being here at the beginning. I'm looking forward to seeing what developers buildโ€”and to hearing what we still need to improve.
