The redundant use of the word lantinx

I totally get the desire to want a gender-neutral version of latino/latina, the way they did it just ticks me off. Why not just say “Latin” without the gendered part at the end? Why do we need to make a new redundant word?

If there’s a reason please tell me, because I‘m probably misunderstanding something.
