The specific skill of naming what you need mid-conversation instead of after it, and why it's so much harder
Easy to identify after a conversation what i actually needed — validation, space, a solution, just to be heard. much harder to identify and say it while the conversation is actually happening.
think it's because naming a need in real time requires processing what's happening and articulating something vulnerable at the same time, under time pressure, often while also managing the other person's reaction.
been trying to build the muscle by starting small — practicing with low-stakes conversations first, just naming "i think i actually just need to vent, not troubleshoot" out loud in the moment instead of realizing it after.
anyone else find real-time need-naming meaningfully harder than after-the-fact reflection? what's helped you close that gap?
