here's a fun inconsequential question for yuns to start the morning: if you were a wood shop teacher in a high school, and you had a sawstop in the shop, what would you make the punishment be for setting it off?
i was engaging in a debate on a different sub and this thought sprung to mind.
i feel like if i were a wood shop teacher in a high school, and i had a sawstop in the shop, i would make an extra punishment for triggering the brake, but id allow the class(es) to vote/help decide on what that was. first days of class usually arent much past 'heres the syllabus, here are some course aims, blah di blah blah' in shop classes you get a tour of the shop and the equipment and thats usually about it (at least from what i remember).
anyway, what i would do if i were a shop teacher would be do the syllabus thing, do a tour - explaining the things to watch out for with each piece of equipment - ending with the sawstop and maybe that demo video of how it works and all that sort of thing. outline that that piece of equipment has that built in safety measure, but that doesnt mean one can be careless using it. that there would be some baseline punishment, dock to a grade or whathaveyou and then you sign and date the saw blade and it gets hung up around the shop somewhere in plain view (my old hs did and still does this), but that the students come up with ideas and then vote on what the extra punishment would be - something like 'you fail that project' or 'you buy the new brake and blade' or something - that way theres more reason to be extra careful and everyone agreed before the work started.
what do you guys think? what would you do? or is this just a terrible idea?
