It began with a lazy fly ball, but it became a permanent label. In the tenth inning of the deciding game of the 1912 World Series, New York Giants outfielder Fred Snodgrass dropped a routine pop fly. The Boston Red Sox rallied to win the championship, and the error was permanently branded the **"Snodgrass Muff."** The drop followed him forever; even 62 years later, his *New York Times* obituary led with the blunder, headlined: *"Fred Snodgrass, 86, Dead; Ball Player Muffed 1912 Fly."*

Yet, Snodgrass’s life was defined by far more than one unfortunate drop. He was an incredibly successful athlete, batting .321 in 1910 and swiping 51 bases in 1911 while helping lead the Giants to three consecutive pennants. When his playing days ended, he returned to California and built a prosperous life as a rancher, banker, and civic leader, eventually serving as the **Mayor of Oxnard**.

Decades later, Snodgrass finally claimed ownership of his narrative. In Lawrence Ritter’s seminal 1966 oral history book, ***The Glory of Their Times***, Snodgrass provided a captivating interview. He spoke candidly and without bitterness about the infamous muff, while also vividly bringing the aggressive, colorful "dead-ball era" back to life. Through his voice in Ritter's masterpiece, fans finally saw Snodgrass as he truly was: a resilient, highly accomplished man who refused to let a single mistake define his legacy.

My collection honors Snograss, Fred Merkel, Mickey Owens, Ralph Branca and other players who made one mistake and refused to be defined by it.
