Hi everyone,

I’ve been seriously considering buying the 39mm HydroConquest, ref. L3.779.4.56.6, and while researching it I came across something I can’t fully understand.

I’m not really deciding between these three watches. The HydroConquest is the one I actually want to buy. I started comparing it with the Spirit Pilot and Spirit Zulu Time mainly because I was trying to understand why the Hydro is priced so much lower.

The current prices I’m seeing are roughly:

HydroConquest L3.779.4.56.6 — **$2,293**

Spirit Pilot L3.809.4.53.6 — **$3,094**

Spirit Zulu Time L3.802.4.50.6 — **$3,717**

So the Spirit Pilot is about **$801 more expensive than the Hydro**, while the Zulu Time is about **$1,425 more expensive**.

What confused me even more is what Longines lists on its own website regarding the movements.

All three are listed as running at **25,200 vph**, with approximately **72 hours of power reserve** and a **monocrystalline silicon balance spring**.

I’m not saying the movements are exactly the same, especially because the Zulu Time clearly uses the L844 GMT movement and has a more complicated function. But when I look only at the basic mechanical specifications published by Longines, they seem surprisingly close.

Then I look at the HydroConquest itself.

It has 300m water resistance, a ceramic unidirectional bezel, screw-down crown and caseback, sapphire crystal with AR coating, silicon balance spring, around 72 hours of power reserve and a steel bracelet with micro-adjustment.

On paper, I can’t really find an obvious area where Longines has significantly cut costs. In fact, from a case construction and tool-watch perspective, the Hydro seems stronger than the other two in several areas.

The Spirit Pilot is around **$801 more expensive**, but it drops from 300m to 100m water resistance and loses the ceramic rotating bezel.

Mechanically, Longines still lists 25,200 vph, around 72 hours of power reserve and a silicon balance spring.

The main obvious technical difference I can see is that the Spirit Pilot is **COSC certified**, while Longines does not state COSC certification on the exact HydroConquest reference page.

This is where I started wondering whether COSC certification and the positioning of the Spirit collection really explain an approximately **35% price increase** over the Hydro.

The Zulu Time makes more sense to me.

It has the L844 GMT movement, an independently adjustable local hour hand, a second time zone, a bidirectional ceramic GMT bezel, COSC certification, and Longines also specifically mentions resistance to magnetic fields.

So I can understand paying more for the Zulu because there is an actual mechanical complication and additional functionality there.

But I still keep coming back to the Hydro.

At roughly **$2,293**, compared with around **$3,094 for the Pilot** and **$3,717 for the Zulu Time**, it almost makes me wonder whether the HydroConquest is priced below what it really offers.

Or is it the opposite?

Is the Hydro simply priced where it should be, while the Spirit models carry a larger premium because of COSC, the Spirit collection positioning, design, finishing and branding?

The HydroConquest is the watch I’m leaning toward buying, but the fact that it is so much cheaper actually makes me wonder if there is something important I’m overlooking.

For those of you who have handled or owned these watches, is there a noticeable difference in movement quality, finishing, bracelet/case quality or overall feel that doesn’t show up on the specification sheet?

Or is the HydroConquest simply one of the better value propositions in the Longines lineup?

Why is the HydroConquest so much cheaper than the Spirit Pilot and Zulu Time? Am I missing something?
