How did Hal know to show up at John's house?

At the end of episode 3 we see John finally get accepted as Hal's backup. John then goes back home and is excited to tell his parents only to find Hal got there first. Did the guardians tell Hal about John? Did I miss something? He just shows up like I'm ready to train you.
