Frequent CTDs on RTX 4090 / Ryzen 7 9800X3D – crashes in settings, map, loading screens, and open world

Question

Hi everyone,

I’m a fairly late adopter of the game. I bought it a few days ago and initially had a great experience for the first 6–7 hours: no crashes at all, just smooth and enjoyable gameplay.

However, since the following day, the game has become almost unplayable due to frequent crashes to desktop (CTDs). I’m running the latest Steam version of the game, so I cannot roll back to an earlier patch.

Issues I’m experiencing

  • CTD when changing graphics settings in the settings menu
  • Random CTDs while exploring the open world
  • Crashes even when the game is simply idling
  • CTDs when opening the map
  • CTDs during loading screens
  • After some loading-related crashes, I have to delete user_engine_option_save.xml before I can get back to the main menu
  • Very frequent CTDs when holding Tab to use the grappling hook

What I have already tried

  • Tested two different NVIDIA driver versions:
    • 610.88
    • 616.56 Neither made any noticeable difference.
  • Enabled and disabled HDR
  • Enabled and disabled DLSS
  • Tested the Cinematic, High and Ultra graphics presets
  • Used the NVIDIA App’s automatic game optimization feature
  • I do not use any mods

Unfortunately, the result is always the same: repeated crashes to desktop.

System specifications

  • Windows 11
  • AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • 64 GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 with 24 GB VRAM

At this point, I’m running out of ideas.

For those of you playing on NVIDIA hardware, especially RTX 40-series cards, what in-game graphics settings and NVIDIA Control Panel / NVIDIA App settings are you using? Did you have similar crashes, and if so, what fixed them?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
