Indian Caste system - what is it and how do you tell who belongs where?

I know it’s supposed to be a thing of the past and many Indians I know say no one cares anymore but say if I, as an American, wanted to be able to approximate where any given Indian person might fall in it, is there any way I can do it? How did Indians themselves do it?
