The Bhootkhel of Tokha.

Literature/साहित्य

Hello Greetings. I just wanted to share a myth or story about Bhootkhel that I learnt recently. Those who are in tokha are familiar with the "bhootkhel park" and if I am wrong than please do correect me.

The word "khel" in newari is said to be a place where infant children who died before nwaran and not eligible to be cremated are buried. So basically bhootkhel was the place where infants were buried and since during old days people gave birth to many children, the death rate were high.

Before the dense civilization people in tokha were inside their home at sunset. Old people there are still scared to get out at the dark and surprised that nowadays people spend time there. Behind the park is three cremation site. So basically the park we know today is built on the "graveyard and place of cremation" The term "bhootkhel" came to exist is because it is said that the place was heavily haunted after sunset. The old ma'am I talked to said that when young they were forbidden to play after dark and there were sightings of ghosts and different activities. So, I found it interesting.

The reason I wanted to share this is because we have lost the essence and story behind the places, urban legend that defined the places. I love reading stories and mainly stories from grandparents or old people who know things. Do share if you know about such urban legend and we need to preserve it...really,
