What should you even learn in today's landscape?

I'm 1 year from graduating with a Bsc in Interaction Design. In my education, I've mostly been working with user research, collaborative design work & sprints, creating and holding workshops, and creating interesting yet virtually pointless prototypes (from a solving user issues standpoint). A lot of experimenting with how interaction can be facilitated using prototypes we make (both digital and physical interfaces, using microcontrollers mostly).

That being said, I am no where close to being proficient in UI design with Figma, or proper programming (without using AI tools in my workflow). I haven't made any prototypes past what would be hand-off points.

In 2026, at this very moment, what skills should I be focused on improving in order to be competitive in today's market? With the focus on AI in workflows, it becomes increasingly confusing in knowing if I should be incorporating it in my daily learning (coding with AI, designing with AI, etc.), or if I should ignore and learn the old fashioned way, and risk being unadjusted to the new way of doing things.

Looking for any advice from those who are currently working in the UX/IxD field, who can give more informative advice on the matter.
