Piercing A Baby's Ears

:metadisk_flair: discussion

Does piercing a baby's ears violate their bodily autonomy?

I really want to see what others think about this. 20 years ago I was dead set against getting my daughter's ears pierced even when my mother pressured me to. I had always been firmly against it. My daughter is now 22 and never seemed to want her ears pierced, was against it every time I asked her. She's never gotten a piercing.

I'm asking because I'm currently 6 weeks pregnant and I have a nagging thought in my head to get this baby's ears pierced if we have a girl, even though I still feel like it takes that choice away from her. However, I also feel like it's two quick little pokes, then done and she won't have to worry about it if she does want to do it in the future. I mean, they get a ton of vaccines as babies, right? I mean, they're obviously not the same thing and I'm sure there a higher potential for an infection with pierced ears than some vaccines, but still.

Anyway, what do you all think? I just messaged my daughter to ask her thoughts, as well. I'm really curious about her opinion.
