If we are free to choose, why do we blame our circumstances?
We often say:
“My childhood made me this way.”
“My experiences changed me.”
“I had no choice.”
“If things had been different, I would have been different.”
And sometimes that’s completely true.
But then where does personal responsibility begin?
If our choices are shaped by our upbringing, biology, trauma, society, and circumstances, how much of our life is actually ours to choose?
And if we are not completely free, can we really be blamed for who we become?
Maybe freedom isn’t about being free from our circumstances.
Maybe it’s about what we do with the person those circumstances have created.
