23M, 5 years of hands-on electrical experience but only 8 months of pay stubs. What are my actual chances with the union?
I’m 23 and I’ve been doing electrical work with my dad’s company since I was 18, so about 5 years total. For most of that time (roughly the first 4 years) I was paid under the table, cash, no pay stubs, nothing on paper. As of this past January I finally got put on actual payroll, so I’ve got real documentation now, but only about 8 months of it so far.
Last year I applied to local 102 and made it pretty far. I aced the interview and aced the test but didn’t get accepted. They never told me why, but my guess is it came down to not having enough verifiable work history/pay stubs to back up my experience, since I basically had no resume or documentation to show for those first 4 years.
I’m planning to apply again this year:
• Local 164 does a lottery just for the application (not sure exactly when it opens, think it’s this fall)
• Local 102 opens applications December 1st, but the class itself wouldn’t start until the following September
For those who have maybe been in these locals what are my actual chances here?
