My (26M) GF (24F) of 7 years broke off an arranged match after he crossed boundaries, but now she says she only wants to marry a rich man. I'm broken. Need advice
Hey everyone, I really need some advice and perspective on a situation that has completely emotionally drained me over the past few weeks.
Background:
My girlfriend (24F) and I (26M) have been together for 7 years. We love each other deeply, but we belong to different castes, which has been a major barrier for her family. She is an only child, very attached to her parents, and terrified of going against them due to societal pressure.
The Forced Arranged Match & Toxic Red Flags:
Recently, her parents forcefully fixed an arranged marriage setup with a wealthy doctor. Initially, out of helplessness, I foolishly told her to go ahead with it. But as reality set in, I broke down—crying every day, unable to eat for a week, begging her to refuse so we could figure things out together.
Her parents made her meet the guy anyway. They met, and he planned an outing the next day. But red flags appeared immediately:
Physical Boundaries Crossed: Without her consent, he grabbed her waist, pulled her into his lap, and picked her up. She felt extremely uncomfortable.
Inappropriate Texts: During the ride home, her hand accidentally touched his thigh. Later, he texted asking if she "enjoyed it too." Two days later, he texted saying he wanted to meet her at a hotel to "have fun."
Red Flags & Disrespect: He had a terrible temper and randomly left home late at night. Despite being a doctor, he made distasteful jokes about menstruation (comparing it to samosa chutney/ketchup).
The Breakdown & Guilt Trip:
Seeing all this and witnessing my continuous emotional breakdown, she called off the relationship with him and informed her parents. Instead of supporting her, her family guilt-tripped her badly—claiming the guy was "down to earth," willing to compromise, and that she ruined a great match.
In her frustration and guilt, she blamed me, saying I ruined her life and stole her future. Desperate, I prayed and told her, "He will call you in two days and everything will be okay." Coincidentally, he called her two days later, giving them another chance to talk over the course of a month.
The Final Dealbreaker:
During this time, the guy's real personality fully surfaced:
He backtracked on his promises—initially saying she could study and help in his business, but later demanding she give up her studies to just stay home, cook, and manage the house.
He admitted his parents were extremely strict and controlling.
Realizing this toxic reality, the alliance was permanently ended. She even mentioned that she never wanted to marry him and only wanted to be with me.
The Current Problem: Money & Changed Mindset:
Now, after everything is over, her mindset has completely shifted. Because that wealthy doctor exposed her to high-end dreams and luxury, she now tells me that she only wants to marry someone who is extremely rich.
I work in an FMCG company in India earning ₹8–9 Lakhs Per Annum (LPA). I come from a middle-class background. While I make a respectable living, I cannot offer the extreme luxury of a wealthy doctor right now. It hurts deeply that after 7 years of love, standing by her, crying for her, and protecting her from a creepy guy, my worth is suddenly being measured against money.
My Stand:
I finally drew a line and told her clearly: "If you want to marry me, I will stand by you for the rest of my life and support you. But if you don't want to, I will not force you anymore after everything I’ve been through."
