Need your advice with anxiety before presentation

Medication

Just a short story for anyone in a similar situation. I'm a pretty stressful person by nature. My work (I hold a PhD) occasionally requires conference presentations. I gave a few talks about 10 years ago with mild anxiety, but they went fine. After that, I didn't need to present again for a while.

I've also lectured to students (40 to 60 people) for over 10 years, and I still feel a bit anxious sometimes, probably like most people with this kind of fear.

My most stressful event was my PhD defense, three years ago. I went through a really difficult period beforehand, unsure how I'd get through it. Before looking into anything medical, I used a bit of alcohol, and (no judgment, please) it worked really well. No stress at all.

Later, I had to deal with a fear of flying. My doctor prescribed two doses of 0.25mg of a benzodiazepine, and it worked great. I haven't needed it since, as exposure fixed everything.

But at my last conference in May, I was extremely stressed and couldn't manage it at all. That left me unsure whether benzos are actually the right tool for this kind of situation for me.

I then read about propranolol. My doctor here wasn't aware it could help with anxiety, but after I shared what I'd read, he prescribed 40mg.

Now I'm not sure what the best option is going forward, whether a higher benzodiazepine dose (as my doctor suggested) or a combination of benzodiazepine and propranolol. He's kind of left the decision up to me. Really confused here. And testing it beforehand is a bit strange, as i am not stressed at all.

Any story from persons that had similar experiences could help. Thanks so much.
