SEZRANT #1 - NEPOS, INDUSTRY PLANTS, AND THE DAMAGE IT CAUSES

Hello all, the first Sezrant is here. I’m going to explain why Nepo Babies and Industry Plants are very damaging to music with two of my favourite examples.

NEPO BABY is a term used to describe a celebrity or rich person who gained their fame or money through family ties, be it a minted/famous family member.

I am not ready to wage war with such a small following, so I will use a fake name to describe these Nepo scum: The Nepo Sons.

The Nepo Sons are a Somerset-born Indie-Rock band started in the early 2020s by 4 brothers and their father. Their first single was to little success, it did alright on the iTunes charts, but not very high. Suddenly, it’s discovered that the boys are all sons (and the husband) of a famous British television presenter. Suddenly, would you look at that, that’s a the only band in the South that anyone gives a shit about. Look how little effort they had to put in and now they have already sold out the O2 arena like a year ago.

I also do not like their strategy. They make severely corporate-sounding rock songs, with horrible overproduction and far too polished. There is no rawness in that at all, no emotion or spirit. They also gain far too much traction from their lead singer and lead guitarist, who rip off their shirt every chance they get in front of an audience full of teenage girls, and these fake rock fans EAT THAT SHIT UP because they are ‘fit’. If an ugly bloke did that at a gig, he would be called a nonce and cancelled straight away. That may sound sexist, but they played ‘Drivers’ Licence’ by Olivia Rodrigo in concert. I have never met a male to ever listen to Olivia Rodrigo. All their fans are teenage girls who fucking fangirl over them. I see all these girls my age who are such fucking POSERS for rock sat there and the second they gained any traction, suddenly every teenage girl I know puts all their songs on their Instagram stories or posts. One more thing that makes my blood fucking BOIL is the way people eat their shit up as if their whole debut album, ‘No Clue’ is ALL about girls apart from one song. Who on God’s green earth wants to hear Mr C. Swift sing in his in-the-middle-of-taking-a-fat-shit-like voice about girls for SEVEN fucking songs on an 8-track album. The more tickets they sell, the more this music and behaviour is promoted. I just ask why. And their fans get so defensive when you mention their slightly pred-ish behaviour and instantly deflect it to Sabrina Carpenter and they assume I think that’s automatically okay, which it is definitely not. So don’t listen or buy tickets, you are promoting fake rock poison. They are a POP boy band with rock instruments. They write all about girls and breakups. They should do our ears a favour and break up themselves.

‘INDUSTRY PLANT’ is a term used to describe those who gain musical fame through backing from major labels, or other illegitimate means. Take, for example, ‘Sadness’ (fake name again to avoid controversy).

Sadness is a clear Industry Plant. His music does not add up to the amount of fame he has and it’s only merit is it’s annoyingly catchy. Not to mention, it’s extremely suspicious how quickly he has gained all this fame. This man also tries so hard to be an outgoing feminist to the point it enrages me. I love feminism. I am a feminist myself, but as a man, he is such a suck up to his audience that his feminism is WOMEN > MEN not WOMEN = MEN. He called out one of his female fans ex partners for cheating when in reality it was the woman that cheated. Didn’t give the man a chance to explain the actual situation, and I genuinely don’t get how this bloke has following. He is in controversy every other day, and yet again, girls just fucking fangirl him because he’s ‘fit’. Go home slender-man, and get out the music industry because none of your fame was earned fairly or legitimately. If you listen to this man, you have the personality of a fucking rock. It’s the definition of corporate/mainstream slop.

As an artist myself who struggles horribly for monthly listeners no matter how long I spend writing or promoting, these two artists just offend me for existing. Look at me here. I spam TikTok’s. I promote my music to the best of my ability. I fight with my own distributor to make sure my songs are out on time, even though no one really cares. I don’t want to be self-absorbed, but fuck me how does that not deserve a single song with over 1,000 streams on Spotify? Not ONE song. These two artists had to do NOTHING for their fame. The Nepo Sons just happened to have a famous mum, so no spending ages promoting online, just going straight to selling out arenas, no little pub gigs, being sat there trying to sell T-shirts and CDs, and as for Sadness, he has gained his fame from faking a persona and having Warner Brothers just promote him all the way to the top because he is marketable due to his looks. These two artists absolutely piss on and make a mockery of small underground artists who are REALLY trying. Fuck you to both examples.🖕

To live on, the Industry NEEDS good bands and solo artists, and NEEDS to take a chance on small artists, not fake personas to make people feel a feeling they aren’t.
