Patient Safety Depends on It: What Every Designer Should Know About 2×MOPP
If you've spec'd a medical power adapter, you've probably seen the term "2×MOPP." But what does it actually mean — and why does it matter?
MOPP = Means of Patient Protection.
It refers to the layers of electrical insulation/protection standing between mains voltage and a patient. Think of it as redundant safety barriers, not just a single line of defense.
⚙️ Why "2×"? A single means of protection means: if it fails, there's nothing left between the patient and dangerous voltage. 2×MOPP means two independent layers of protection — so if one fails, the second still protects the patient. This is the standard required for equipment with direct or indirect patient contact (monitors, infusion pumps, diagnostic devices).
📊 Quick comparison:
• Consumer electronics → basic insulation, no patient-contact requirement
• General medical equipment (no patient contact) → 1×MOPP or 1×MOOP may suffice
• Devices with patient connection → 2×MOPP required
This isn't bureaucratic overkill — it's the reason a single insulation fault in a hospital doesn't become a patient safety incident.
When evaluating power suppliers for medical products, "2×MOPP" should be a non-negotiable line item, not a nice-to-have.
