Is there a way to recover old iMessages?

I have an old iMessage conversation with someone I haven’t talked to in a long time, and I noticed that a lot of the old messages are missing, I have no idea why they disappeared

Is there any way I can recover them?
Also are iMessages automatically synced to iCloud?
