Movie of the day...Nosferatu (2024).
We all know the story. The real question is whether Robert Eggers knows how to tell it.
In a word, yes. This is a truly brilliant version of the classic vampire tale. The cast (including Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe) provides strong, convincing performances. It feels like we are watching real people confront the actual horror of a vampire.
The cinematography is outstanding. In particular, the scenes set in Transylvania make us feel we are in a vast and isolated country. Once one has entered Orlok’s castle, one is truly in his power.
Sets and costumes are excellent. The houses and streets and offices of Wisburg look like real, lived-in places. It is a simple matter to be drawn into this fictional world.
And, finally, it is a well-directed film. Eggers creates a rich atmosphere, tense, ominous, and unsettling, with many moments of genuine and sometimes grisly horror. One aspect I particularly like is how much graphic sickness and decay is associated with the vampire; Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) truly is a creature of rot and pestilence.
It is not a perfect film. At times, the lurid, gothic excess and the scenes of suffering and madness are a little too theatrical, but these are minor complaints. This is simply one of the best vampire movies ever made.
