One of the reasons Pokemon is more successful than Digimon: Clear rules
I want to start saying that I have nothing against Digimon, I like it, and I know many people here are Digimon fans too. But I think it's an objective fact that Pokemon as a franchise is more successful than Digimon worlwide. Of course, there have been better and worst moments for both frannchises, and it's perfectly possible than at certain moments a certain digimon anime (or game or whatever) have been more popular than a certain pokemon anime (or game or whatever). But, in general, we all agree that there are more people that like Pokemon than people that like Digimon in almost every country in the world.
There are multiple reasons, of course, and some of those reasons have been varying in importance with time and among the demographics. But une reason that I think that makes Pokemon more easy to sell, specially to kids, it's that they have a set of clear rules that are mostly true in every media, be it a product developed by GF, TPCI or a third party.
Pikachu evolves into Raichu with a thunder stone. That's true in almost every game, anime, manga... the evolutionary family is Pichu, Pikachu, Raichu. You can add Alolan Raichu, Megas, okay, but every kid knows that Pikachu evolves into Raichu, and with every kid takes any Pokemon game (be it the mainline games, spin off, mobile games) they usually can evolve their Pikachu into Raichu, like they saw on the anime, manga, a comercial or they heard from their cousin that is playing a different game.
By the other hand, evolution on the Digimon world(s) are a mem at this point. I played some Digimon games and the evolutions and their requirements were different in every incarnation. I watched my fair share of Digimon animes and the same thing. The Digimon experts could clarify me how this view it's not completely true, I'm sure, but for the normies that have curiosity for the franchise it can be overwhelming.
That applies to types too, for exaample. In general the types matchup work the same way everywhere, but Digimon don't have this rock-paper-scissor rule (or not as consistent) and it's difficult to know what Digimon have advantage against who. I know how a Raichu vs Gyarados is going to go on most games, it's not so obvious if Gallantmon has the advantage agianst Devimon or not.
I could continue with a lot of other things (Bulbasaur is the 1 on the national Pokedex always, there are 1025 Pokemon...) but I think you get the idea. I'm sure Digimon fans could correct me if I have said something wrong, but I think it's correct that this is the vision that people have on the outside and it's a lesser barrier of entry for Pokemon and a competitive advantage.
