half the kitchens i see have an over the range microwave vent that goes nowhere

Mine blew straight back into my face for two years and I never questioned it. pulled the cover last month and the flap was still set to recirculate, filter grey with grease. does anybody check which way the over the range microwave vent is aimed before they hang it?
