Genealogy brick wall: David Clopton, born c.1794 Virginia — who were his parents?

I’m trying to prove or disprove a frequently repeated relationship in the Clopton family.

**David Clopton**

born about 1794, reportedly Virginia/Pittsylvania County

married Lavinia Jane Cogdal in Hardin County, Kentucky, in 1817

later lived in Missouri

died 1865

Many online trees identify his parents as **John Clopton (b. 1759/1760)** and **Martha/Jane Perkins**.

I have documentation that John Clopton married Jane Perkins in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on 25 October 1788, and another record placing John and wife Jane in Mecklenburg County in 1798.

What I have NOT found is the document that actually says David was their son.

I’m looking specifically for probate, wills, deeds, court records, tax lists, family Bible entries, correspondence, older genealogies with citations, or records of David’s proposed siblings that might establish the relationship.

Has anyone researched this particular Clopton family or encountered an original source proving David’s parentage?

I’m happy to share the records I already have and would especially appreciate citations to original documents rather than copied online trees.
