Astra just released give Codex devs some time to tune the harness around it
Astra was only released about a day ago, so I think we should expect some rough edges in Codex for at least the next week or two.
There are probably going to be issues around the harness, tool usage, compaction, instruction following, context management, efficiency, and how Codex gets the best out of the model. A new model being strong by itself doesn’t automatically mean the surrounding agent harness is perfectly tuned for it on day one.
We saw something similar when Sol first released. There were quite a few quirks initially, but over the following 2–3 weeks a lot of things improved, and it eventually became genuinely very good to use.
I expect Astra will be similar. We probably just need to give the Codex team some time to understand its behavior and tune everything around it.
That said, we should keep reporting every reproducible issue we find instead of just accepting the problems. Auto-compaction getting stuck, strange tool behavior, unnecessary token usage, reasoning issues, context problems, regressions whatever it is.
And if Astra is acting especially bad for you right now, I’d honestly suggest switching back to Sol for the time being. Some of what people are seeing may genuinely be bugs or harness issues that still need fixing, not necessarily the model itself being bad.
Report the issue with as much detail as possible, use Sol if you need something more stable right now, and try Astra again as new Codex updates roll out.
The more useful reports they get, the easier it should be to make Astra in Codex as effective, reliable, and token-efficient as possible.
I wouldn’t judge Astra + Codex completely based on the first few days. Report the quirks, use Sol when needed, give them some time to tune it, and then see where Astra lands.
