Most photographs of **Calakmul** show what survives today: a few enormous pyramids rising above an almost endless forest.

But in the seventh century, this was not a ruined ceremonial center hidden in the jungle.

It was a city.

This is our reconstruction of **Calakmul at the height of the Kaanul — or Snake — dynasty, roughly 650–750 CE**, with particular attention to the world in which *Jade and Blood* takes place.

Calakmul was one of the great political centers of the Classic Maya world and the principal rival of Tikal. By the Late Classic period, the Kaan dynasty had established its seat here, commanding a far-reaching network of allies, subordinate rulers, marriage ties and military relationships across the Maya Lowlands.

The archaeological city was enormous. Mapping has documented thousands of structures across more than 30 square kilometers. Modern LiDAR surveys reveal an urban landscape far denser and more extensively engineered than the isolated monuments visible to visitors today.

So our starting question was simple:

**What would Calakmul have looked like when all of it was alive?**

Not just Structure II.

Not just the Great Plaza.

The whole city.

In this reconstruction, the monumental center is surrounded by layers of elite compounds, administrative buildings, residential groups and smaller household clusters. Raised **sacbe causeways** move through the settlement and connect it to the wider landscape. Reservoirs and modified wetlands form part of the city's water system. Between the stone complexes are gardens, managed vegetation, working spaces and dense tropical forest.

At the center stands **Structure II**, one of the largest Maya pyramidal complexes ever built.

To the west lies the **Gran Acrópolis**, a massive architectural concentration associated with elite residence, administration and royal power.

To the north is **Chiik Naab**, famous today for murals that preserve extraordinary glimpses of everyday Maya economic life.

And beyond all of them, the city continues.

That scale matters for *Jade and Blood*.

Our story begins in **675 CE**, when the political order dominated by the Snake dynasty still appears formidable. Calakmul is not treated as a collection of archaeological ruins in the novel. It is treated as a functioning capital: messengers arriving along roads, nobles moving between compounds, priests crossing plazas, servants carrying water and food, markets operating, fires burning inside houses, delegations waiting for audiences, soldiers watching entrances, and thousands of ordinary people living beyond the monumental core.

The reader should be able to understand that when Chak or Muwan crosses Calakmul, they are crossing **a real urban landscape**, not walking from one famous pyramid directly to another.

And over that landscape hangs something the people inside the story cannot yet know.

In **686 CE**, Yuknoom Ch'een II dies.

In **695 CE**, Calakmul suffers its famous defeat against Tikal.

The great political system of the Snake dynasty does not disappear overnight, but the balance of the Maya world has changed.

That is the historical horizon of *Jade and Blood*.

These images are therefore not intended as exact archaeological blueprints. They are **evidence-based visual reconstructions**: archaeological plans establish the known structures and urban geography; uncertain areas are filled conservatively to show a plausible living city at its Late Classic height.

The goal is not to make Calakmul more spectacular than it was.

The archaeological evidence already tells us it was spectacular.

The goal is to put the people back inside it.
