7 week old has become chronically overtired - help???

Tips and Tricks

I feel like I'm caught in an unending doom loop of over tiredness over the past 5 days or so and I have no clue how to escape it, and I'm getting so much conflicting feedback from different people that I'm beside myself and wondering if anyone else has had this experience.

For the first few weeks of my baby's life, I really wasn't paying attention to wake windows because I had been under the impression it was an unscientific concept and to "go by the baby's cues." In hindsight, I realize this is what was leading to baby being so hard to settle at the end of her wake windows during weeks 5 and 6 - she would be howling and inconsolable by the end and would eventually just kind of collapse into sleep.

I had an LC appointment last Friday where after the LC was doing some tummy time with her and sitting her outward facing, and she chilled out, she told me that baby is just bored because she's becoming more developmentally aware and that I just need to do more with her and stop constantly having her in positions where she has to "stare at the ceiling." I had been consistently reading her hand chomping at the end of the wake windows as wanting a second feed , so its possible I was over feeding her.

Me being very literal, I took this way too far and started OVER stimulating her the next few days by doing way too many things at once - e.g., too long of a stretch of tummy time while playing music while having cards in front of her then having her play on the activity mat while also talking to her , in the same 30 minute stretch. The first few days of this she seemed pleased as punch during the day time, but come early evening, things got very bad and she fought sleep so hard that she was awake for 4 hours at once on Sunday evening. What eventually worked to get her through that was basically straight jacket holding her against my chest with a shirt on to mask the milk smell.

That night, she went 6 and a half hours between feeds before I woke her up out of concern about her not eating enough. After doing some googling (I know....) I determined it was my fault for overstimulating her , and since then, I've been kind of trying to chill her out and not do too too much, but she STILL seems over tired. Another night after that this week, she went NINE and a half hours because she got overtired again and was up for 3 hours before her long sleep stretch. She's also over the past 3 days suddenly regressed on tummy time , when she was doing insanely well with it before. She was lifting and turning her head multiple times for the previous few weeks but is now pretty much just staying down on her preferred side and wanting to chomp on her hand. She's also been straightening one of her legs more than the other, and ptetty much refusing to stay on her non preferred side (which has swapped from previous weeks) despite physically being able to turn her head that way without any issues or pain.

On Thursday, the entire day, she was inconsolable every single time she was awake except for when eating and sleeping. This was a new level of fussiness and felt off to me, and she wasn't responding to gas relief techniques, so I called the pediatrician nurse line. They had me bring her in to check for an ear infection based on some of her behavior. Of course when we got in the car and through the whole appointment, she was totally alert and calm , and it was deemed there is absolutely nothing wrong with her. The NP we saw checked the range of motion in her hips, and there's nothing wrong with it, so the leg straightening doesn't seem to be anatomical. She made a comment to me about over feeding babies by offering too much comfort nursing and said some babies just need to be "left alone to chill" when fussy and don't want to be held.

I want to point out that I noticed between the LC appointment, when I consciously tried to stop comfort feeding her, and this appointment, 6 days apart, she only gained 2oz. In previous weeks she has been gaining way more heavily. The ped office doesn't know about the LC measurements so from their perspective, she's fine and following her curve, but it seemed off to me.

Bottom line is since then, she has still been sleeping insanely long stretches at night after a ton of fussing, and she has been yawning and doing her frantic air biscuits basically 8 minutes into her wake windows while still eating. Sometimes she even starts the air biscuits immediately upon waking. I honestly do not know what to do to down regulate her safely anymore. The amount of sleeping she's doing has dropped her to 7 feeds, and some of them have been pretty short. I'm at a loss about how to tell if shes hungry when she's constantly hand chomping including for self soothing, and is either frantic or totally asleep during all feeds.

Can someone else who has experienced something similar let me know wtf you did to help that finally worked? I am seriously getting freaked out here. I know weeks 6-8 are "the peak of developmental fussiness" and also the time dyschezia is getting them down, but the amount she's sleeping just seems totally abnormal and off to me. I would think she should be recovered from her being over stimulated earlier in the week by now.
