Something I’ve been randomly thinking about lately: how close were the four Ikshvaku brothers actually to each other?

I feel like whenever their relationship comes up, the conversation almost immediately becomes Rama–Lakshmana. And obviously, their bond is incredibly important. But there were four brothers, and I’m curious about the relationships we don’t hear as much about.

Like, what was Rama and Bharata’s relationship actually like before everything happened? Were Rama and Shatrughna close? What about Lakshmana and Shatrughna? Did the four of them have a normal sibling dynamic when they were young joking around, arguing, teasing each other, looking out for each other, etc.?

And more importantly, are there details about this in Valmiki Ramayana that I’ve simply never noticed, or in other versions/traditions?

I’d especially love to hear about things that aren't the standard:

“Lakshmana followed Rama into exile.”

“Bharata refused the throne.”

Those are obviously huge, but I’m wondering about the smaller, more personal moments that tell us what these guys were like as brothers.

Are there passages in other Ramayanas, Puranic traditions, regional versions, commentaries, or even modern retellings that explore their sibling relationships more deeply?

Basically, if you had to explain the bond between all four brothers as siblings not as princes, heroes, or devotees, but just as brothers what would you say?

Would love to hear some lesser-known examples because I feel like there’s probably a lot more here than what usually gets discussed.

We talk about RamaLakshmana so much, but what about the other two brothers?
