A question for the ham radio community

Hi everyone, want to convince my parents to let me join an ham radio club, what benefits will that have for me? They say all it is, is talking to old people on the radio. They dont see the benefits of it like emergency communications, or anything like that. How do I convince them to invest my future in something like that?
