The Crying Machine - Steve Vai - Live Tone, HELP ME

I’m trying to recreate the guitar tone Steve Vai uses specifically on “The Crying Machine” from Live in Minneapolis – Where the Wild Things Are (2009), not the studio version.

The tone I’m after is that huge, saturated Vai lead tone from the live performance — very smooth and vocal, with a lot of sustain and compression, but still extremely clear and articulate. It has that glossy, liquid quality when he bends/vibratos, with a strong upper-mid presence without becoming harsh or fizzy.

I’m especially interested in the tone during the lead/solo sections, where it gets very expressive and singing, but still has that tight live-guitar response underneath.

What I’m trying to achieve:

  • Software/digital only
  • No physical amp, pedals, modelers, etc.
  • Ideally using free plugins / free amp sims / NAM captures / free presets
  • I have a guitar + audio interface and can use VST plugins
  • I’m not looking for “a tone that sounds Vai-ish” — I want to get as close as realistically possible to this specific live tone
  • Presets, captures, plugin chains, exact settings, or even just advice on the amp/cab/effects chain would be massively appreciated

I know the exact live rig may be difficult to reproduce, but I’m looking for the closest digital recreation of what is actually heard on the Where the Wild Things Are recording.

If anyone has already made a preset/capture for this tone, please link it.
