Newborn won’t let me put him down for even 2 seconds!

Anyone else’s newborn refuse to be put down? My baby is 2 weeks + 2 days old. First week and a half was amazing and we thought we had this whole thing down as first time parents. Now if I put him down in his bassinet or even just on the couch for a SECOND he starts full blown crying within minutes. And it’s such a struggle at night to the point where I dread nights. I change and feed him and then let him fall asleep in my arms for about 15 min and then transfer him to the bassinet in our room. Within minutes he’s being fussy and crying and then as soon as I pick him up he’s like a little angel baby. It has really interfered with my sleep over the last 3-4 days. First night of this I literally had to hold him in my arms ALL NIGHT and sit up at an incline in my bed and dozed in/out of sleep. I know that’s not safe and I don’t want to be doing that but we also can’t listen to a newborn screaming in our room all night. I need to be able to do basic things too during the day like go to the bathroom and eat!! This has gotten out of control and I’m wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same thing with their newborn? Please send advice. Is this normal? Should I stop carrying him so much? Not sure what to do. Oh and btw our pediatrician said just let him cry it out I guess.
