I’ve been interested in UFOs for a long time, so when I came across the series *Project Blue Book*, I couldn’t just pass it by. Even the title itself made me curious. Project Blue Book isn’t just a made-up name for a TV series. It was a real U.S. government program that investigated UFO sightings. And that’s probably what I find most interesting about the whole series. There was a real program behind it, real people, and real cases. Of course, you have to keep in mind that the series changes and dramatizes many things. It’s not a documentary. Even so, while watching it, I caught myself thinking several times: “Okay, but how much of this actually happened?”
And that’s exactly the moment when the series got me.
The main character is Dr. J. Allen Hynek, an astronomer and scientist who becomes involved in investigating UFO cases. At the beginning, he seemed like exactly the kind of person I would expect to be involved in something like this. He wants evidence, looks for rational explanations, and doesn’t immediately believe that every strange object in the sky has to be an alien spacecraft. And honestly, that’s why I liked him. I’m interested in UFOs, but I’ve never felt the need to believe everything that gets associated with them.
But Hynek gradually comes across cases that become harder and harder for him to explain. And this is where I think the series really starts to get interesting. We watch someone who wants everything to have a logical explanation slowly find himself in situations where he’s no longer so sure. I wouldn’t say that he suddenly becomes a “believer in aliens.” It’s more that he starts accepting the possibility that there are simply things we don’t know.
And to me, that’s much more interesting.
Alongside Hynek is Captain Michael Quinn. The two of them are very different, and that’s one of the things I enjoyed about their relationship. Quinn is a military man with a history of war behind him, and he looks at the world very differently from Hynek. While Hynek wants to understand exactly what a sighting means, Quinn is primarily concerned with whether it could represent a threat. And when you think about the time period, that makes sense. It was the Cold War, the United States was afraid of the Soviet Union, and any unknown object in the sky could potentially be a problem.
This is where I think the series shows that UFOs don’t necessarily have to be about aliens.
What if some of these sightings involved secret military technology? What if certain cases really did need to be kept secret? And what if people who saw something were simply given an easy explanation so they would stop asking questions?
I’m not saying that’s what actually happened. But as a subject, I find it fascinating.
And the series plays with this idea almost constantly.
The further you get into the story, the more you feel that something else is happening behind the UFO cases. It’s no longer just about what people saw. It starts becoming about who knows what, who is watching whom, and who has access to information that ordinary people will never see.
And that’s when I realized that *Project Blue Book* isn’t really just a series about UFOs.
It’s also a series about secrets, the military, espionage, and how easy it can be to hide something from the public if you have enough power to do it.
General James Harding is interesting in this respect as well. From the beginning, I had the feeling that he knew much more than he was willing to say. Maybe that’s exactly what the writers intended. Maybe I’m simply more suspicious because I’m someone who is interested in UFOs, but characters like that are exactly what keep me watching. You constantly find yourself wondering what they actually know and just how far their knowledge goes.
General Hugh Valentine is a slightly different case. With him, I never felt that things were quite as simple as “evil general who is hiding something.” He’s more like someone who is part of a system and may genuinely believe that certain information simply cannot be made public. And I think that’s an interesting question outside the series as well. If a government really knew something extraordinary, should it tell the public? Or are there situations where keeping certain things secret is actually the better option?
Then there’s Mimi Hynek, who brings something completely different to the story. Hynek becomes more and more consumed by his work and the cases he’s investigating, but at home, there’s still a normal life waiting for him. Through Mimi, you realize that investigating UFOs isn’t just some exciting adventure. It can affect a person’s personal life as well.
And I can’t forget about Susie Miller. There were several moments when I found myself thinking that I probably wouldn’t completely trust her. On the surface, she seems like a nice woman who becomes close to Mimi, but as the series progresses, it becomes clear that there is another side to her story. And that storyline adds another layer to the series. Suddenly, you’re not even sure who’s actually on whose side.
What I like most about *Project Blue Book* is precisely this uncertainty.
I don’t like stories where the creators explain everything to me within five minutes. With UFOs, I think the mystery is the most interesting part. If the series ended every case by saying, “It was an alien,” I’d probably get bored pretty quickly. At the same time, I wouldn’t enjoy it if every single case turned out to be nothing more than a balloon, an airplane, or a weather phenomenon.
What interests me much more is the gray area in between.
Did someone actually see something unknown? Did they make a mistake? Or was someone trying to convince them that they had seen something else? Could it have been secret technology? And are there cases that still can’t be reasonably explained today?
Those are the questions that keep bringing me back to UFOs.
And *Project Blue Book* gave me even more of them.
Of course, I wouldn’t believe everything the series shows. You can’t. Some events have clearly been changed for the sake of television, and some things were obviously created to make the story more dramatic. But that’s exactly why I think you shouldn’t simply finish the series, say “good show,” and move on.
In my opinion, it’s worth looking into the real Project Blue Book afterward. The actual cases, the real witness accounts, and, most importantly, how those events were officially explained.
Because that’s where the whole subject becomes even more interesting.
Personally, after watching the series, I’m no more convinced that aliens are visiting us than I was before. But I’m also no more convinced that every UFO sighting can simply be dismissed.
And maybe that’s the best outcome.
The series didn’t convince me of one particular theory. Instead, it made me think again about how much we actually know about these cases.
For me, *Project Blue Book* isn’t really a series about flying saucers. It’s a series about questions that may not have simple answers.
And if, like me, you have a weakness for UFOs, mysteries, old military cases, and anything that exists somewhere on the border between fact and the unexplained, I think you might enjoy this series.
