Can we talk baby showers?

Got invited to a baby shower for a great-niece. Have only seen her a few times in her life. This is a couples invitation, so both my spouse and I are invited.

I would rather just send a gift card and skip the whole thing. I don't like sitting around watching someone open gifts, and everyone oooh and ahhh over stuff that was listed on the registry. Plus, the dumb games that they play. I used to go and make handmade gifts, like a baby quilt, soft books, or baby sleepers, but no one seems to care about those things anymore. One time, a mother said the quilt didn't match the nursery color scheme.

The last one I was invited to was a disaster because they gave the babies' names (twins) before the party, and people had custom items made. They were born 7 weeks early, and one of the twins didn't survive.

Do you like baby showers? Do you go, or do you send gift cards? Do you make items, buy off the registry, or wing it?
