Cleared a PlusPoints upgrade at the gate but declined it to sit with my partner - do the points auto-redeposit?

I flew yesterday, waitlisted from economy to Premium Plus with 40 PlusPoints. My partner was also on the list. Right before boarding, my upgrade cleared but theirs didn't, so I told the gate agent I'd pass and stay in economy. Agent put me back in my original seat and I flew in economy.

Points still show as deducted in my account. I've already contacted United and they said to wait for it to process, but I've seen mixed reports about whether gate-declined upgrades actually redeposit on their own.

For anyone who's been in this spot: did the PlusPoints come back automatically, and roughly how long did it take? Or did you have to call and push for a manual redeposit?
