Why isn't vegetable oil used for diesel engines in this setting?

From what I understand, vegetable oil can be used to power diesel engines with far less modification than is needed to use alcohol, while also not requiring a complex distillation process, so why isn't it used? Did the original devs just not know about it being an option?
