I need help Think Tanking an accessibility quilt..

Pattern/Design Help

Hi Everyone! I am coming to you all with a very specific help request. I know that the cross-over between the quilting people and the clothing people is more of a Venn-diagram than a circle (I don't know why people assume that if you sew, you can do ALLLLL of the sewing things) so hopefully there are some in this group with enough crossover experience to help me.

Context: I am newly in a wheelchair part time. It is primarily for higher exertion activities. I have two kids so this is often spent outside. While it may be 100℉ and hot enough to boil this cold-weather girl alive right now, I know projects take time and I need to start now to be able to not over exert myself trying to get it done by winter.

Project idea: I would like to be able to make a lap quilt, and It'll more be like a sleeping bag, which is fine, that I have no issue with. The concept I'm struggling with is how to incorporate some invisible zippers into the quilting to provide accessibility without having to remove the whole thing as well as not detracting from the quilt design.

My skills (that I think may or may not be relevant):

  • Sewing clothing: seams, zippers with lining
  • Basic quilting: It's a newer process for me, but something I'm picking up pretty quickly. My grandma taught me to sew and I watched her sew several quilts so I think it's a watching then doing situation
  • Thinking so far outside of the box I lose sight of it πŸ˜…πŸ˜…
  • Visualizing 3-dimensionally so I can see all sides of the object
  • Picking up new skills quickly

So all of this to say, the biggest part I am having an issue thinking through is with the batting. I am partial to the stitch & flip/quilt-as-you-go method as I find that the least taxing for me (and my tiny sewing machine), but I can do typical quilting style as well. If not, I'll just hand quilt it while I'm sitting at home (actually I think that'll be the most favorable if the flip method isn't the likeliest to work).

So wonderful people: what methods do you think would work best for this? Bonus points if blog/pictures or youtube videos are shared to help everyone visualize!
