Old Church
Hello everyone,
I have a unique opportunity and a big heart, but I need some practical guidance.
There is a small, historic church in my rural area in Canada that is no longer an active place of worship. It sits on a small lot with an adjacent cemetery. The building itself is charming, has a beautiful bell, and is considered a local historical site.
I am not a Christian, nor do I have any experience running a church, a cemetery, or a community venue. However, I am passionate, willing to learn, and deeply feel that this little place deserves to be cared for and kept alive.
My Vision:
I don’t want to see it fall into ruin. I envision a hybrid space that:
- Respects the past: Maintains the cemetery, identifies the people buried there, and keeps them woven into local culture (e.g., memorial wildflower planting every summer).
- Serves the present: Opens the church as a community gathering spot - think small weddings, concerts (that bell!), art shows, or historical tours.
- Becomes sustainable: Generates enough revenue (through events or donations) to cover maintenance, insurance, and taxes.
My Questions for You:
- Legal & Zoning: Can a decommissioned church with an active cemetery be repurposed for events? Are there restrictions on "public assembly" near graves?
- Cemetery Rules: I am OK to keep it open so anyone can visit. Actually I love cemeteries and would like to clean them up and maintain them.
- Funding: Are there grants for rural historic preservation, even if I’m not a religious organization? Can one person do this? I do not have money but I could probably get the washroom installed to the municipality on my own though it will cost me a lot of money to be honest. But I do not have a lot of money. I am professional but parttime semi retired but willing to give time, attention and care as long as I can physically do.
- Practical Steps: What is the very first thing I should do? (Form a non-profit? Talk to the town supervisor? Church, city or who exactly?). I know the demonization of the church but I am not familiar who or what or where to even start.
- Warning Signs: Has anyone tried this and failed? What pitfalls should I avoid?
I am a total beginner but ready to put in the sweat equity. Any advice, resources, or cautionary tales would be immensely appreciated.
I found it walking around and fell in love with it.
Thank you for reading!
P.S. If anyone has experience with turning a historic religious building into a community arts venue, I'd love to hear from you directly how you handled insurance and noise ordinances!
