In the Season 4 teaser, we see Per Stenson in the world before the Silos, watching the news. Several screens are showing reports about thousands of dead blue whales. I think this scene might be much more important than it first looks, because the show actually planted this clue back in Season 3.

In S3E3, there’s already a screen talking about “Mass Whale Deaths” and people trying to figure out what caused them. They mention things like military testing, sonar and the collapse of ecosystems. At the time it was easy to see it as just another piece of background information, but then Season 4 gives us the same event again, this time showing Stenson watching it happen in the world before the Silos. There’s even a line in that earlier discussion: “The Earth is reacting, and humanity is the target.” That makes the whale deaths feel a lot less random.

My theory is that this is one of the things that pushed Stenson toward the Silo project. He sees the world falling apart and comes to the conclusion that the problem isn’t just some environmental disaster. The problem is humanity itself. Humans are destroying the planet while at the same time claiming they’re trying to save it. So instead of simply building shelters to survive the apocalypse, Stenson starts thinking on a much bigger scale: what if humanity itself needs to be isolated, controlled and essentially rebuilt?

That would also explain why the Silos are more than just underground bunkers. They’re basically a controlled experiment. People are separated from the outside world, their history is restricted, their memories are manipulated, and society is deliberately shaped over generations. The goal isn’t simply to keep a few thousand people alive until the disaster passes. It’s to see whether humanity can be changed enough to eventually return to the outside world without repeating the same mistakes.

And this is where Stenson starts becoming something much more dangerous than a guy trying to save the human race. If you genuinely believe that you’re the only person who understands how humanity can be saved, it becomes very easy to justify controlling everything. At some point, saving humanity stops being about giving people a future and becomes about deciding what that future should look like.

Then there’s Moby-Dick in S3E10. Victor is looking at Moby-Dick; or, The Whale shortly before his death. After everything we’ve now seen with the whales, I don’t think that choice of book is accidental. Moby-Dick is obviously about a whale, but more importantly it’s about Ahab’s obsession with trying to conquer something far bigger and more powerful than himself. Ahab believes he can overcome the whale, while Stenson, on a much larger scale, seems to believe he can control something even harder to control: humanity itself.

There’s an interesting parallel there. Ahab starts with the idea of defeating the whale, but his obsession eventually becomes the thing that destroys him. Stenson may have started with the idea of saving humanity, but somewhere along the way, saving people seems to have turned into controlling them.

So I wonder if the whale deaths are basically the moment we’re seeing the beginning of Stenson’s transformation. He sees the world collapsing, decides humanity is the problem, and then convinces himself that he has to take control of humanity’s future.

If that’s what the show is setting up, then that scene of Stenson staring at those dead whales in the Season 4 teaser could actually be the moment where the whole Silo project begins. 🐋

[Theories - Season 4 teaser] I think we just saw where the Silo project really started 🐋
