How to advocate for myself?
I’m sure we’ve all experienced trauma from medical gaslighting especially as a woman being told you are just being neurotic, and to lose weight.
I (21F) try to advocate for myself but I feel like they don’t take me seriously. Or sometimes I get myself upset and start tearing up. Because I’m frustrated and angry that I’m not being listened to. I just feel like an emotional wreck. I cannot compose myself like a lot of other women can. I do have anxiety, I am neurotic sometimes but it is not the cause of my physical symptoms. I feel like I just make myself look bad by being overly emotional. I have to worry so much about how I’m presenting myself to be taken seriously.
A lot of people say to bring people to your appointments, but not everybody has people supporting them in their life. So some have to do it by ourselves. My mother usually comes with me to my appointments but she doesn’t really stick up for me, she kind of just believes whatever the doctor says which is annoying. My father lives far away but even if he was close, he is a medical gaslighter himself. He always says I’m overthinking and it’s in my head. When I go to appointments by myself they treat me tremendously different in a negative way.
I don’t really have any other men in my life, and my parents are not going to live forever and I don’t have any other close family so I know i will eventually have to learn how to advocate for myself. Literally considering hiring a random guy from hinge or tinder to come to my appointments with me, and to advocate for me. Lmao. It seems like thats the only way someone would listen to me is if a man was there.
