How to insure self to drive in California?

Hello. I have no clue how to handle insurance stuff, and I don't have anyone to teach me. I am being allowed by my partner's grandfather to drive his car as he cannot drive anymore, but I believe i need insurance to drive. I am not currently a resident of California so I know that will be the first step, but beyond that I am lost. Thanks in advance.
