Blindsided breakup explained

venting/ranting

My (35/f) boyfriend (37/m) of over two years blindsided me with a break up and all of a sudden didn't want the "same future". He called me crying and sobbing saying how he didn't think I should come up to see him this week, how he didn't want to hurt me and how much he hated himself. He said he needed the week alone to think and get some things straight which confused me because he also said we were no longer together. He said we could talk in person when he returns to our home base next week. Prior to the breakup we've had to spend the summer 3 hours apart (his work) and I've been driving up to see him a week at a time. He was acting distant and withdrawn which triggered my instincts but I ignored them assuming I was overreacting. I've spent the last week replaying my whole relationship in my head to come and learn he made a reservation this evening for two at very romantic restaurant (he doesn't know I know). I felt disgusted and angry because I knew something was off and I didn't trust my instincts. I called the restaurant and asked to send two glasses of champagne to 'my brother and his girlfriend', with a message congratulating him on taking the next step, I love you so much- my name. I haven't heard from him since and I wonder if I will but I am devastated and wished I trusted my gut.
