Can Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT actually build a website without producing the usual AI slop?

In this video, I put AI to the test.

I start with a typical AI-generated website that looks generic, predictable, and honestly a little too "AI." Then I take that same website and completely redesign it using a proper design system, better visual hierarchy, typography, spacing, components, and attention to detail.

For the design direction, I use Refero's design system library.

For this project, I picked the Samara design system and used it as the visual foundation for the redesign.

The goal isn't to prove that AI can generate HTML and CSS. AI can already do that.

The real question is:

Can AI be used to create websites that actually look and feel like a professionally designed website?

In this video, you'll see:
• What an AI-slop website looks like
• How I identify the problems in the original design
• How I use a real design system to guide the redesign
• How AI helps transform the website
• Improvements to layout, typography, spacing, colors, and components
• The final website compared with the original AI-generated version

I'm using AI as a design and development tool, not as a replacement for design thinking.

The difference is in the process.

If you're a web designer, developer, freelancer, agency owner, or someone interested in AI website builders, this experiment should give you some ideas for using AI more effectively.
