Undertale tips for beginner

Any tips on fights. Feels quite difficult when I'm at a boss. I'm lvl 6 and having trouble with the spider boss with the pet. Can't seem to flee or weaken much so any tips that may help? Are the lvls important as it kinda reminds me of the old pkmn games but don't know how if it works differently and how much it matters
