For parents going all in on sports for your kids, what is the end game?
I have been thinking a lot about this. I know SO many parents who have gone sports crazy, and I just wonder why? Is it to play in college? Get a scholarship? Go pro or to the Olympics? I also really wonder, especially for the younger kids, who is steering the ship? (I'm not actually wondering, it's the parents).
I also wonder what an entire family revolving their whole lives around their child's sport does to a kid and the family life in general.
I will give some examples of what I've encountered just in my little area:
-A family who sent their high school aged son to boarding school to play hockey ($80,000 per year school)
-Several families who have their 7 and 8 year olds playing on two different club and travel soccer teams AT THE SAME TIME (equaling probably 5-6 days a week of soccer for 2nd and 3rd graders for most of the school year).
- families bringing kids to multiple sports in one day year round (a basketball clinic and then softball practice in the summer when kids used to take a break from organized sports!)
I googled some stats around this:
Out of ALL varsity HS athletes: 2% with go D1 in college. 6-7% will go D2 or D3.
Out of ALL the NCAA athletes: 2% of them will go pro in a sport
1 in 500,000 people will go to the Olympics
So, if you look at an entire town full of baseball teams or soccer teams, maybe two kids might play in college? Out of those 2 kids, neither will go pro.
Interestingly, I am a parent who LOVES sports and grew up very passionate about my own sports. So, I can certainly understand kids loving sports, but to the extent of what's happening in youth sports right now.. I don't believe they love it THAT much. I know because I was one of those kids. So, what's going on? What is the end game if there is such a limited chance of continuing on past high school anyway?
