ASUS laptop won't boot properly on battery + high CPU temps
I'm having a strange issue with my ASUS laptop and I'm trying to figure out whether this is a hardware, BIOS/EC, or Windows power-management problem.
Specs:
- ASUS laptop
- Intel Core i5
- Intel Iris Xe graphics
- Windows 11
The problem
The laptop won't start unless I connect the charger.
Even when it does manage to start on battery, I often get a blank/black screen for an unknown amount of time. During this time, the laptop gets extremely hot even though I'm not doing anything.
Previously, I discovered a weird workaround: if I connected the laptop's USB-C port to a USB-A port using a data cable, the ASUS logo would sometimes appear and the laptop would continue booting. This workaround doesn't work anymore.
The CPU also reaches 80°C+ on average in HWiNFO, even when I don't expect it to be under heavy load.
Once Windows finally starts, I noticed that the power mode resets to the performance mode every time I boot. I deleted that plan in control panel. but it's will be there in next bootup.
If I manually select the appropriate power/performance mode in Windows/Control Panel, everything starts behaving normally. The CPU temperatures and performance are fine after that.
Things I've already tried
- Checked BIOS for relevant power settings — couldn't find anything useful.
- Tried setting ThrottleStop to start with Windows/at boot — didn't solve the issue
- Disabled performance boost in the Balanced power plan
- Checked ASUS/MyASUS settings
- Manually selecting the correct power mode after every boot temporarily fixes the high-temperature/performance issue
But the battery-only boot/black-screen problem remains.
I'm wondering if this could be related to the battery, Embedded Controller (EC), BIOS/firmware, ASUS power-management software, or Windows power plans.
Has anyone experienced something similar with an ASUS laptop? Any Solution
